Selvedge fabric is woven entirely by hand instead of through mass production, and while it’s only 65-80 cm wide, regular factory fabric averages around 160 cm. Those are the two main factors that push the price up. A standard pair of men’s straight-leg trousers takes about 2.6 meters of selvedge fabric to make, compared to just 1.4 meters of regular fabric.
