Raw Denim Guide

30-40 years ago, raw denim jeans were sold as something completely ordinary – now they’ve become a high fashion product category.

Which fabrics and fits is raw denim preferred for?

The fit needs to be at least straight fit or looser-baggy. Since slim fit styles include lycra, there’s a risk of 10% or more shrinkage when the product is washed at home.

100% cotton denims barely shrink at all when washed at home – around 1% or even less – so if you’re going to make raw jeans, 100% cotton is the better choice.

But just being 100% cotton isn’t enough on its own. Not every fabric has the same stiffness. Even within raw denim, we generally prefer to make raw jeans from fabrics with a softer hand feel. That said, the jeans will soften up once washed at home regardless.

For raw denim, we can make it in whichever color you prefer – black or blue. Every denim fabric has its own distinct raw color.
